A Celebration of Public Art to take place Thursday, September 12th
The City of Travelers Rest is pleased to announce the completion of three new murals in town. The murals were designed and painted by Adam Schrimmer, owner, and lead artist of Blank Canvas Mural Company, with painting support from Marc Evan and Jody Wells. Each mural captures meaningful images and stories that represent the city’s rich heritage and beautiful surroundings.
The first mural, located on the building that houses the retail store Urban Hare, was inspired by a quote from E.E. Cummings and features a vintage European poster-like scene of a female cyclist with flowers in her bike basket, a hare and Paris Mountain in the background.
Located on the Highsmith & Highsmith building, Schrimmer captures the city’s strong connection to nature and appreciation for active, outdoor living. The mural shows two hikers relaxing while enjoying a beautiful mountain view, calling to mind the city’s long history as a place to rest.
To honor the city’s history and small-town story, Schrimmer painted a postcard mural portraying notable historical events and people who helped set a course for future generations. The postcard mural is located on the building next to Loftis Printing.
“I am incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to paint these murals in the beautiful community of Travelers Rest. Community engagement is at the heart of what we do, and this project not only allowed me to engage with city residents, but it also gave me the ability to create meaningful and lasting relationships,” said Adam Schimmer. “I hope these murals help tell the story of this fantastic community – one that I’ve come to love – for many generations to enjoy.”
“Public art is an impactful way to create a sense of place and identity for a community, and murals are valuable tools,” said Shannon Herman, Travelers Rest City Administrator. “The city is proud to have had the opportunity to partner with Blank Canvas to install these beautiful murals for our town.”
To recognize the Blank Canvas mural project and those who supported it, the city is hosting a public gathering to celebrate public art. The event will take place on Thursday, September 12th at 10:00 am in the lot next to Loftis Printing, 301 S. Main Street.
