Town Guide
Travelers Rest is more than a little stopping point along the way to somewhere more important. In fact, it’s become a destination all its own.
It’s a growing, vibrant town with a revitalized downtown and a growing economy, which includes a thriving food scene. Travelers Rest’s boom in growth is thanks, in large part, to the creation and success of the GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail, a more than 20 mile long rails-to-trails pathway that begins just north of Travelers Rest and runs all the way into downtown Greenville and beyond.
Many folks – more than half a million every year, in fact – hop on the Swamp Rabbit Trail to walk, jog or bike from Travelers Rest to Greenville or from Greenville to Travelers Rest. It serves as a wonderful connection between the two cities.
But don’t worry. Even with all its changes, Travelers Rest still feels like the peaceful mountain town it’s always been, where there’s still enough time in the day to slow down and stop what you’re doing to watch that beautiful sunset in the sky or to grab a seat out on the porch, sweet tea in hand.
It’s the sort of place where you’re bound to see an old friend or to make a new one every time you visit one of our unique restaurants, shops, attractions or lodgings.
Don’t just run through our town. Stop – and rest awhile.
1974 Airstream Retro Design Time Capsule Camper
Ever dream of traveling the country in a classic Airstream?
Well, you can’t drive off in this one, but you sure can rest and relax in the Harestream Haus, a vintage and lovingly restored 1974 Airstream. It’s practically a time capsule.
The design is vintage but the comforts are modern. Plus, it’s darn cute. You’ll even find vintage magazines! There might even be some Cracker Jacks on the kitchen table waiting for you.
Relax on the front porch – enjoy those twinkly lights after the sun sets. Spend the afternoon lounging in a hammock near the Airstream. There’s a darling shower right inside the Airstream but there’s also a bonus shower – an outdoor one, in fact.
Local hosts Jonathan and Diane own two other short term rentals you can see here on our page. Plus – they have one more rental coming soon! Follow them on Instagram at Haus Holidays.

Ace Hardware – the helpful hardware folk!
And now you can get that genuine helpfulness in Travelers Rest on State Park Road beside TD Bank.
Ace Hardware stocks and sells everything you need for your home. But seriously – everything.
From painting (look for Magnolia or Benjamin Moore paints) to grills (think Weber and Traeger) to hammers and rakes. Right inside the shop, just to the left as you enter, is an entire section of the store dedicated to Stihl equipment – both purchases and repairs. For birders, you’ll find a long and full aisle with suet and seed, birdhouses (ones tough enough to keep the squirrels away) and locally created backyard beauties too.
The Paul family has lived in TR for almost two decades and they care deeply about the community and are committed to giving back through the store in many ways. Behind the cashier you’ll often find Shiela or Jeremy – mother and son!

Designed in a Barn, Tested on the Farm.
Flip flops. Leather bags. Clutches. Wallets. Our products speak for themselves.
From concept of idea, to prototype, to finished product, all our designs are uniquely our own.
Welcome to Cooks where we design, build and test all our products against the rigors of farm life, surf trips and adventures in between. We view all our designs as machines. They must perform in such a way as to accomplish a necessary task. If it can’t perform, we aren’t going to produce it.
We begin by cutting and hand sewing all our products. We then test it in the field to make sure it performs and then we physically tear the product apart to find its weakness. We then tweak the design as needed, put it on paper and get it ready for production.

Dicey Langston Historical Site
If you are driving along Tigerville Road, just a few miles north of the center of Travelers Rest, you will come across a stone pyramid, about the height of a person. If you go too fast, you will miss it. But where this little monument stands, next to a private home, was once the western frontier of our country.
Here stands a monument to mark the life and legacy of Laodicea ‘Dicey’ Langston Springfield, a woman who would become, in some literal senses, a founding mother to Travelers Rest and the communities near here. A woman who, when she was but a 14 year old girl, became a heroine of the brutal conflict in the war in the South Carolina backcountry. In the nearly 240 years since, there have been historical and nonfiction books of teenage Dicey, a school named after her, historical societies formed in her honor, even songs and poetry written about Dicey.
You can read more about Dicey in our article here.

iVIVA salts are mined in Pakistan and arrive here in their raw form.
From that raw state, iVIVA owner Katie White crafts salt lamps, salt massage balls, salt soap and more products. Of course, you can also purchase Himalayan salt for seasoning and baking and cooking.
iVIVA salt is the only salt you need. Table salt contains only one mineral – Sodium Chloride. Sea salt, on the other hand, has ten minerals but is harvested from a polluted ocean source and then processed. But iVIVA Himalayan Salt is mined by a compliant mine in Pakistan, purely, unprocessed, and contains 84 minerals and trace elements.
Salt lamps are valuable in reducing allergy symptoms, not to mention they are beautiful as well.
iVIVA also carries essential oil blends and products as well.
Visit their website to learn more about iVIVA salt and salt products. Once you’ve tried the pink salt, it will become the only salt you buy!

Sassafras Mountain
The highest point in South Carolina, Sassafras Mountain is a part of the Blue Ridge Mountains and stands at 3,563 elevation.
In 2019 a new observation tower was built at Sassafras and now you can enjoy an even more spectacular view of the North and South Carolina mountain ranges. The tower is divided right on the border between the two states and it’s always fun to stand with one foot in either state at the same time.
Take a few minutes to read the messages written on the bricks that denote the donors who helped make the tower project possible. (Our favorite is a tie between the couple sharing their marriage date and the quote “We’re all just walking one another home.”)
Take a picnic up to the top and enjoy it on one of the many rock outcroppings at the top.
Sassafras Mountain is a stop along the famous Foothills Trail and you can walk either direction for as long as you care to from the observation tower. (All hikes from here will be out and back only.)

The Postage Stamp Mural
This mural is a show stopper along the Swamp Rabbit Trail.
She’s a genuine beauty.
We love the way artists Carissa and Jesse Bowser meticulously detailed and artistically drew many of the aspects we love best about our little town at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. (Hiking. Walking. Biking. Dining out. Coffee. Shopping.)
We love how we continually see photos of folks pausing in front of the mural. Photos with their pups and their bikes and their kids and their friends. Jumping photos and laughing photos and family photos.
You know what else we just adore about this particular TR masterpiece?
The story behind it.
The way this mural came from an idea to a landmark with the help of our readers and our friends and our TR family.
Read the genesis of it all right here!
And – if you want to bring a mini version of the mural to have at home – pick one up as a sticker or a print or a postcard at TR Makers Co. (Or email us to order them in bulk for your your AirBnB guests or co-workers!)

Topsoil Kitchen & Market
864.610.2281
More than just a restaurant, Topsoil Restaurant was founded by three friends who wanted to connect with their food in a more meaningful way.
Their classroom is a 16 acre farm in Travelers Rest, and their mentors are a handful of passionate neighboring farmers. They have built a thriving operation that has given them a valuable perspective and respect for the hard work that small farms do daily to put food on our tables and in our picnic baskets.
The kitchen and market they have built to showcase these efforts is in the historic Williams Hardware store in Travelers Rest nestled between Main Street and the Swamp Rabbit Trail.
Their menus celebrate the seasons and always begin with phone calls to farmers. This honest connection with the people that grow the food they prepare is what they want to share the most.
To these three friends, Topsoil is something much greater than a kitchen and a market, it is a love letter to long growing seasons and hard working small farmers
Find Topsoil on Facebook and Instagram.
Plus, they frequently host special events – meeting artists, brunch, jazz, wine tastings, chef’s suppers & more!

TR History Museum

The History Museum of Travelers Rest building was constructed at 8 S. Main Street in 1926 by W.H. Vest, originally operating as a grocery store. In 2010, T.L. Baldree, a local realtor, donated the building to the Historical Society on the condition that it be relocated.

The historic building was transported to the southern edge of Travelers Rest and placed on property donated to the city of Travelers Rest by the Bob Roe family. Located along the Swamp Rabbit Trail, the bricks on the front of the building are from the former Travelers Rest High School, built in 1956 and razed in 2011.
The museum houses artifacts and exhibits related to Travelers Rest and the surrounding area, highlighting our history of being a resting place for people traveling back and forth between the mountains and the coast and beyond.

The Whistle Stop at the American Café has been a family-owned cafe since 1945, when it was purchased by Troy Styles, Sr.
The building has served as a Travelers Rest landmark since it was first built on Main Street in Travelers Rest in 1932.
Located along the Swamp Rabbit Trail, the American Café (as it was then known) was a “whistle stop” – a place the conductor would stop when signaled.
Expanded and renovated in 2013, the Whistle Stop features the cafe’s vintage bar stools, hand made chestnut counter, exposed beam ceiling and brick walls – plus a charming train on tracks around the building. Kids – and grown ups – love it!
