Town Guide

Travelers Rest is more than a little stopping point along the way to somewhere more important. In fact, it’s become a destination all its own.
It’s a growing, vibrant town with a revitalized downtown and a growing economy, which includes a thriving food scene. Travelers Rest’s boom in growth is thanks, in large part, to the creation and success of the GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail, a more than 20 mile long rails-to-trails pathway that begins just north of Travelers Rest and runs all the way into downtown Greenville and beyond.
Many folks – more than half a million every year, in fact – hop on the Swamp Rabbit Trail to walk, jog or bike from Travelers Rest to Greenville or from Greenville to Travelers Rest. It serves as a wonderful connection between the two cities.
But don’t worry. Even with all its changes, Travelers Rest still feels like the peaceful mountain town it’s always been, where there’s still enough time in the day to slow down and stop what you’re doing to watch that beautiful sunset in the sky or to grab a seat out on the porch, sweet tea in hand.
It’s the sort of place where you’re bound to see an old friend or to make a new one every time you visit one of our unique restaurants, shops, attractions or lodgings.
Don’t just run through our town. Stop – and rest awhile.
Ace Hardware
864.610.0224
Ace Hardware – the helpful hardware folk!
And now you can get that genuine helpfulness in Travelers Rest on State Park Road beside TD Bank.
Ace Hardware stocks and sells everything you need for your home. But seriously – everything.
From painting (look for Magnolia or Benjamin Moore paints) to grills (think Weber and Traeger) to hammers and rakes. Right inside the shop, just to the left as you enter, is an entire section of the store dedicated to Stihl equipment – both purchases and repairs. For birders, you’ll find a long and full aisle with suet and seed, birdhouses (ones tough enough to keep the squirrels away) and locally created backyard beauties too.
The Paul family has lived in TR for almost two decades and they care deeply about the community and are committed to giving back through the store in many ways. Behind the cashier you’ll often find Shiela or Jeremy – mother and son!

Adventure Park
Located right beside the popular Trailblazer Park and City Hall is Travelers Rest’s newest (and probably coolest!) playground for kids!
Intros community space kids will enjoy climbing structures, swings, a merry go round, obstacle course equipment, a small ropes course and two zip lines!
The playground equipment is inclusive and strong enough for all ages.
It’s a beautiful spot to play on a Saturday spent at the Farmers Market or at an evening concert with the family. There are picnic tables and some shade from the sun. There’s plenty of parking and it’s right beside the practice fields for youth football so the siblings will be grateful for the distraction!

Designed in a Barn, Tested on the Farm.
Flip flops. Leather bags. Clutches. Wallets. Our products speak for themselves.
From concept of idea, to prototype, to finished product, all our designs are uniquely our own.
Welcome to Cooks where we design, build and test all our products against the rigors of farm life, surf trips and adventures in between. We view all our designs as machines. They must perform in such a way as to accomplish a necessary task. If it can’t perform, we aren’t going to produce it.
We begin by cutting and hand sewing all our products. We then test it in the field to make sure it performs and then we physically tear the product apart to find its weakness. We then tweak the design as needed, put it on paper and get it ready for production.

Dicey Langston Historical Site
If you are driving along Tigerville Road, just a few miles north of the center of Travelers Rest, you will come across a stone pyramid, about the height of a person. If you go too fast, you will miss it. But where this little monument stands, next to a private home, was once the western frontier of our country.
Here stands a monument to mark the life and legacy of Laodicea ‘Dicey’ Langston Springfield, a woman who would become, in some literal senses, a founding mother to Travelers Rest and the communities near here. A woman who, when she was but a 14 year old girl, became a heroine of the brutal conflict in the war in the South Carolina backcountry. In the nearly 240 years since, there have been historical and nonfiction books of teenage Dicey, a school named after her, historical societies formed in her honor, even songs and poetry written about Dicey.
You can read more about Dicey in our article here.

Humble Roots is a local company making stellar pimento cheese.
They offer three varieties:
The Original. This is a classic recipe passed down from the owner’s grandmother. This classic delicious mix of white and yellow cheeses is a favorite and you will instantly know why they haven’t touched this recipe. We hope that you will enjoy your Grandma’s Original Spread as much as their family has for generations!
Spicy Jalapeño. This twist on the original recipe is for the spice lovers. Although they rate the spiciness mild to medium, the “Spicy Jalapeño”” has a kick that will leave you humble for more!
Smoked Gouda Goat. Their most popular spread is the Smoked Gouda Goat. This unique mix of artisan aged smoked gouda and goat cheeses creates a flavor unlike any pimento spread you’ve had before. Try this spreadable edible and see what all the buzz is about.
You can find Humble Roots at the following locations: Travelers Rest Farmers Market, Brewery 85, Greer Farmers Market, Clemson Farmers Market.

iVIVA

iVIVA salts are mined in Pakistan and arrive here in their raw form.
From that raw state, iVIVA owner Katie White crafts salt lamps, salt massage balls, salt soap and more products. Of course, you can also purchase Himalayan salt for seasoning and baking and cooking.
iVIVA salt is the only salt you need. Table salt contains only one mineral – Sodium Chloride. Sea salt, on the other hand, has ten minerals but is harvested from a polluted ocean source and then processed. But iVIVA Himalayan Salt is mined by a compliant mine in Pakistan, purely, unprocessed, and contains 84 minerals and trace elements.
Salt lamps are valuable in reducing allergy symptoms, not to mention they are beautiful as well.
iVIVA also carries essential oil blends and products as well.
Visit their website to learn more about iVIVA salt and salt products. Once you’ve tried the pink salt, it will become the only salt you buy!

Website Open MapKindred Makery
Kindred Makery is made up of best friends Hannah Webb and Maddi Meglic.
Together we make handmade, small-batch pottery with the intention of bringing people together. We strive for a balance of functionality and beauty in all of our work. Functionality in the sense that our pots are made to be used and held often. They are designed to serve their purpose well, standing the test of time and being passed between friends and loved ones. The beauty we seek is a timeless one. Our pots are neutral in tone and simple in design because we want them to look like they belong in any home at any time. Our desire is that they will inspire togetherness – be it a vase of flowers given to a loved one, a sweet conversation with a friend over a cup of coffee, or a lengthy meal eaten at the table with family.
We feel strongly about using our art to inspire communal experiences because to a large degree, community is part of our identity as a business and our journey of how we became one. We chose the word Kindred because it embodies these ideas. Just as Anne in Anne of Green Gables uses the term kindred spirits to refer to people she feels a natural connection with, we know that we are able to do what we love every single day because of the support we have received and continue to receive from the community around us. Just as our business is founded in friendship, between both the two of us and also our strong support system, we want to to extend this to our customers through the products we make.
Before pottery became a business for us, it was a hobby that we enjoyed doing together in between our full-time jobs. We found that we made a well-balanced team and really flourished in how life-giving working together was. We started by selling a handful of items to friends and family, then Hannah’s brother took a chance on retailing some of our products through his own small business. We slowly added in pop-ups and farmer’s markets and from there it felt like the right move to see what could happen if we went all in. We both have family members and friends who own successful small businesses, so we sought their advice and looked to their example. They helped give us the courage to take a risk on something we had only ever dreamed of, but never expected to become a reality.
You can find us online at Kindred Makery and at our local pop ups. You’ll also find our mugs and other seasonal items in stock at Swamp Rabbit Cafe & Grocery.

Poinsett Park is a favorite with kids and parents.
Parking is easy and there’s a playground for the kids to enjoy with swings for kids of all abilities and levels. It’s a great meeting spot for summer days and after school get togethers.
A small creek runs alongside the park and kids can dip their toes in and even catch a few small fish if they come prepared.
A walking path loops around the park and after four laps you’ve made a mile – while still keeping an eye on your children. Bikes and scooters are allowed on the paved path – just be respectful to the walkers of all ages enjoying the trail with you.
A large field inside the loop is perfect for soccer or kickball, flying kites or just enjoying a picnic together with friends and family. There are some shady trees with benches and tables beneath for warmer days.

The highest point in South Carolina, Sassafras Mountain is a part of the Blue Ridge Mountains and stands at 3,563 elevation.
In 2019 a new observation tower was built at Sassafras and now you can enjoy an even more spectacular view of the North and South Carolina mountain ranges. The tower is divided right on the border between the two states and it’s always fun to stand with one foot in either state at the same time.
Take a few minutes to read the messages written on the bricks that denote the donors who helped make the tower project possible. (Our favorite is a tie between the couple sharing their marriage date and the quote “We’re all just walking one another home.”)
Take a picnic up to the top and enjoy it on one of the many rock outcroppings at the top.
Sassafras Mountain is a stop along the famous Foothills Trail and you can walk either direction for as long as you care to from the observation tower. (All hikes from here will be out and back only.)

The Postage Stamp Mural
This mural is a show stopper along the Swamp Rabbit Trail.
She’s a genuine beauty.
We love the way artists Carissa and Jesse Bowser meticulously detailed and artistically drew many of the aspects we love best about our little town at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. (Hiking. Walking. Biking. Dining out. Coffee. Shopping.)
We love how we continually see photos of folks pausing in front of the mural. Photos with their pups and their bikes and their kids and their friends. Jumping photos and laughing photos and family photos.
You know what else we just adore about this particular TR masterpiece?
The story behind it.
The way this mural came from an idea to a landmark with the help of our readers and our friends and our TR family.
Read the genesis of it all right here!
And – if you want to bring a mini version of the mural to have at home – pick one up as a sticker or a print or a postcard at TR Makers Co. (Or email us to order them in bulk for your your AirBnB guests or co-workers!)

Additionally, Thompson Family Farms provides educational field trips, u-pick flowers, classes and other events to let you experience the farm and learn about agriculture.
The Thompson family includes siblings Josh and Morgan, and their respective spouses, Sara and Michael, as well as 7 children between them. They also receive help from parents and grandparents making the business a true family-run farm, with 4 generations cultivating the land.
At Thompson Family Farms, they enjoy growing beautiful things at the farm but they recognize that all of these gifts are from our Heavenly Father. What they grow is temporal, but God’s Word and his work last forever.

TR History Museum

The History Museum of Travelers Rest building was constructed at 8 S. Main Street in 1926 by W.H. Vest, originally operating as a grocery store. In 2010, T.L. Baldree, a local realtor, donated the building to the Historical Society on the condition that it be relocated.
The historic building was transported to the southern edge of Travelers Rest and placed on property donated to the city of Travelers Rest by the Bob Roe family. Located along the Swamp Rabbit Trail, the bricks on the front of the building are from the former Travelers Rest High School, built in 1956 and razed in 2011.
The museum houses artifacts and exhibits related to Travelers Rest and the surrounding area, highlighting our history of being a resting place for people traveling back and forth between the mountains and the coast and beyond.

Home.
The word means something different to everyone. It’s where you place your head, where you entertain friends, where you feel most at rest. It’s where your family is – and for most of us, where our heart is too.
If you’ve got a vision for your future home build, well – we know a guy.
Trivium Homes is a full service home building company that specializes in building homes in the target range of $350K to $750K.
“There are three things that really matter to me in home building,” Jim shares, a clear confidence exuding for the topic. “Design – making sure our homes are really well designed. Craftsmanship – making sure our homes are really well built. Beauty – making sure when it’s all said and done that you have a beautiful finished product.”
Jim’s goal for Trivium Homes is to have a reputation that draws folks in. He wants people to hear about the Trivium experience and to say – I want them to build my house!
He has another goal as well – “We want homes that are timelessly beautiful and that will outlive the builder who built them.”

Upstate Occupational Therapy
864.430.1831
We’re halfway through the school year. Those of us who are parents or folks who work with kids and young adults in educational or work settings know that the half way mark lets us see the patterns and habits and struggles that our children are sometimes facing.
It’s a time to reassess and to make a plan to help the kids we love grow into their best selves.
Sometimes, growing into that best self takes some extra effort beyond mom and dad and beyond the traditional classroom setting.
Sometimes that help comes in the form of professionals like Donna Corley, an occupational therapist.
Using anatomy, neurology, sociology, and psychology, Occupational Therapists create a personalized plan to target each child’s unique physical and mental challenges for improving daily function and overall quality of life.
Donna is a talented therapist who has recently opened an office to serve kids ages 4 to 20. Her years of experience can help make a genuine difference in the life of a child – and in the life of their family too.
Wondering how you know Donna? Well, her husband is Nate Corley of Nate’s Pizza, a long time TR business owner and community supporter.
Donna works with kids with fine and gross motor skill issues, learning challenges, emotional dysregulation, ADHD, handwriting issues and so much more.
If you have a child or a student who you think would benefit from this therapy, reach out to Donna and begin a conversation!
